Snapchat emojis aren't decorative — they're data. Each emoji next to a friend's name tells you something specific about your relationship: how often you snap each other, how long you've been best friends, and where you rank in their inner circle.

Here's what every single one means.

Friend Emojis

These appear automatically next to usernames based on your snapping activity. You can't manually assign them. Snapchat calculates them from how you and your friends interact.

💛 Yellow Heart: Besties

You're each other's #1 Best Friend. You send the most snaps to them, and they send the most snaps to you. This is mutual. If it's one-sided, you'll see a different emoji.

❤️ Red Heart: BFF

You've been each other's #1 Best Friend for two weeks straight. The yellow heart upgraded. Keep snapping to reach the next tier.

💕 Pink Hearts: Super BFF

Two months as each other's #1 Best Friend. This is the highest friendship level on Snapchat. If you see pink hearts, that relationship is locked in.

😊 Smiley Face: BFs

They're one of your Best Friends (top 8), but not your #1. You snap them frequently, just not the most.

😬 Grimacing Face: Mutual Besties

Your #1 Best Friend is also their #1 Best Friend. You're essentially competing for the same person's top spot.

😎 Sunglasses: Mutual BFs

One of your Best Friends is also one of their Best Friends. You share a mutual close friend but aren't necessarily close with each other.

😏 Smirk: One-Way Best Friend

You're one of their Best Friends, but they're not one of yours. They snap you a lot more than you snap them.

Streak Emojis

🔥 Fire: Snapstreak

You and this friend have snapped each other within 24 hours for at least three consecutive days. The number next to the fire shows how many days the streak has lasted. Some users maintain streaks for years.

⌛ Hourglass: Streak About to End

Your streak is running out. Both of you need to send a snap (not a chat — an actual snap) within the next few hours, or the streak resets to zero.

💯 Hundred: 100-Day Streak

You hit 100 consecutive days of snapping. The 💯 replaces the fire emoji for that day, then goes back to the regular fire count.

Other Emojis

🎂 Birthday Cake

It's their birthday (based on the date they entered in their Snapchat profile). Appears for 24 hours.

⭐ Gold Star

Someone replayed this person's snap in the last 24 hours. It doesn't tell you who replayed it.

👶 Baby

You just became friends with this person on Snapchat.

Snapchat+ Solar System

If you have Snapchat+ (the paid subscription), you get access to the Friend Solar System. This feature places you at the center as the Sun, and your eight closest friends orbit you as planets.

Each planet represents a position in your Best Friends list:

PlanetPositionWhat It Looks Like
Mercury#1 Best FriendRed planet, 4 red hearts
Venus#2Beige planet, blue/yellow/pink hearts
Earth#3Green/blue planet with moon
Mars#4Red planet, blue/purple hearts
Jupiter#5Orange planet with dark stripes
Saturn#6Orange planet with ring
Uranus#7Green planet, no hearts
Neptune#8Blue planet

When you visit a friend's profile and see a "Best Friends" or "Friends" badge, tapping it reveals which planet you are in their solar system.

Customizing Friend Emojis

You can swap the default emojis for any emoji you want:

  1. Open Snapchat → tap your profile icon
  2. Tap the gear icon (Settings)
  3. Scroll to Customize Emojis (under "Additional Services")
  4. Tap any category (Besties, BFF, Super BFF, etc.) and pick your replacement

This only changes what you see. Your friends still see the defaults on their end.

FAQ

Why did my yellow heart disappear?

Someone else became their #1 Best Friend, or you stopped being theirs. The yellow heart requires mutual #1 status. If either of you starts snapping someone else more, it drops.

Do chats count toward streaks?

No. Only picture or video snaps count. Text chats, stickers, and Memories don't maintain streaks.

Can I have multiple Best Friends?

Snapchat tracks up to 8 Best Friends based on who you interact with most. But only one person can hold the #1 Besties spot (yellow heart).

What's the difference between 😊 and 😏?

😊 (BFs) means you're both in each other's Best Friends list. 😏 (Smirk) means you're in their Best Friends list, but they're not in yours. The interaction is lopsided.

Do Snapchat+ planet positions update in real time?

They update regularly based on your interaction patterns, but not instantly. Give it a day or two after changes in your snapping habits.
