The vCard standard was created in 1995 by the Versit Consortium (a collaboration between Apple, AT&T, IBM, and Siemens) and is now maintained by the IETF. The current version, vCard 4.0 (RFC 6350), was published in 2011 and adds native support for social media profiles and improved internationalization. However, vCard 3.0 remains the most widely supported version across devices and email clients.
