How to Write Headlines That Convert

Eight out of ten people read the headline, but only two out of ten read the rest. Your headline determines whether your content gets read, shared, or ignored. Here are five principles behind headlines that consistently drive clicks.

  1. 1. Lead with a specific benefit. "How to Double Your Email Open Rate in 30 Days" outperforms "Email Marketing Tips" because it promises a concrete outcome. Specificity builds credibility.
  2. 2. Use numbers to set expectations. Numbered headlines ("7 Ways to...", "5 Mistakes That...") tell readers exactly what they will get. They also make content feel skimmable, which lowers the barrier to click.
  3. 3. Trigger curiosity with a knowledge gap. Headlines like "Why Most Landing Pages Fail (and What to Do Instead)" create an itch that can only be scratched by reading the article.
  4. 4. Include power words strategically. Words like "proven," "essential," "free," and "ultimate" increase perceived value. Place them near the beginning where they are most visible in search results and feeds.
  5. 5. Keep it under 60 characters for SEO. Google truncates title tags around 60 characters. Front-load the most important words so your headline communicates its value even when cut short.

The Science Behind Great Headlines

Research from content platforms and marketing studies reveals patterns in what makes headlines perform.

  • Word count matters. Headlines with 6 to 12 words consistently get the most engagement. Shorter headlines lack context; longer ones get truncated and lose impact.
  • Emotional resonance drives sharing. Content that triggers high-arousal emotions (awe, anxiety, anger) gets shared more than content that triggers low-arousal emotions (sadness). Your headline sets the emotional tone.
  • Question headlines outperform in social. Headlines framed as questions generate more comments and discussion because they invite participation. "Why" and "How" questions perform especially well.
  • Uncommon words increase click-through. Headlines with a mix of common and uncommon words outperform those using only everyday language. Unusual word choices signal fresh thinking and stand out in crowded feeds.
