What Are Twitter Cards?

Twitter Cards are rich media previews that automatically attach to tweets containing links. When someone shares a URL on Twitter/X, the platform reads meta tags from the linked page and renders a visual card with the page title, description, and an image.

Without Twitter Card meta tags, shared links appear as plain text URLs. With proper card markup, your content gets a visual preview that drives significantly higher click-through rates. Studies show that tweets with rich media cards receive up to 40% more engagement than plain links.

Twitter Card Types Explained

Twitter supports several card types, but the two most commonly used are:

  • Summary Card: Displays a small square image (1:1 ratio) on the left side with the title, description, and domain on the right. Best for articles, blog posts, and product pages where the text content is more important than the image.
  • Summary with Large Image: Shows a large, wide image (2:1 ratio) spanning the full width of the card, with the title, description, and domain below. Best for visual content, portfolios, landing pages, and anything where the image tells the story.

Twitter also supports Player cards (for video/audio) and App cards (for mobile apps), but these require approval from Twitter and are used less frequently.

How to Set Up Twitter Cards

Setting up Twitter Cards requires adding a few meta tags to the <head> section of your HTML. Here are the essential tags:

  1. 1. twitter:card defines the card type ("summary" or "summary_large_image").
  2. 2. twitter:title sets the title shown in the card. Keep it under 70 characters for best results.
  3. 3. twitter:description sets the description text. Keep it under 200 characters.
  4. 4. twitter:image points to the image URL. Use an absolute URL (starting with https://).

If you already have Open Graph (og:) tags on your page, Twitter will use those as fallbacks for any missing twitter: tags. However, adding explicit twitter: tags gives you more control over how your content appears on the platform.

Twitter Card Best Practices

  • Use high-quality images. Blurry or pixelated images make your content look unprofessional. Use at least 1200x600px for large image cards.
  • Write compelling titles. Your title competes with every other post in the feed. Be specific and direct. Avoid clickbait.
  • Keep descriptions concise. Twitter truncates long descriptions. Front-load the most important information in the first 100 characters.
  • Test before publishing. Use this validator to check how your card will appear before sharing. Small issues like an incorrect image ratio or a truncated title can reduce engagement.
  • Use absolute image URLs. Twitter cannot resolve relative paths. Always use the full URL starting with https://.
